Do’s and Dont’s of Selecting Your Credit Card Processing Partner

Do’s

  • Do use a local provider- local businesses have a reputation at stake and will be able to meet face to face if and when an issue arises
  • Do use an Accredited Member of the Better Business Bureau – reputation counts!
  • Do make sure you understand all discount fees – unfortunately not all credit cards are alike and not all fees are the same. Key entered transactions and international/business cards have a higher cost to the processor so make sure you understand the cost.
  • Do get references from all providers – in most businesses 50-70% of the business is done with credit/debit cards. Make sure you know who is handling your money.
  • Don’t wait until you are ready to open your doors to activate your account – too many businesses leave this major decision until the last minute. Making the decision earlier in the process, will help you to make an informed and better decision for your busines
  • Don’t assume you are signing up with your bank – most banks offer merchant services as an add-on product. Make sure you understand the relationship between the bank and the processor and more importantly, understand who will be handling the service.
  • Don’t assume your termination fee is a flat fee – some processors have implemented a cancellation fee that equals charges that would be occurred over the remainder of the agreement. This could incur thousands of dollars in penalties.
  • Don’t make a decision until you have talked to Retriever first. We will be honest and upfront and guide you through the process.
